Being More Referable

In a world where everybody has an incentive program and a special offer in an attempt to create additional referrals they are really missing the point. It is true that these things will do something to generate more business but it really takes a different approach to create referrals that keep coming and regenerating through customers on to new customers. Building a foundation that automatically generates referral momentum is not done through external actions, it starts by implementing the internal tendencies that I am about to talk about into yourself, your brand and the culture of what you do.

Today in my BNI chapter, I gave a talk on how to be more referable. I really wish that I had recorded it because I was able to integrate my talk into the businesses and lives of the people who were present to hear about it. In this audio podcast I have attempted to recreate the talk and use a few real life examples of how a person of business can make themselves more referable. I hope you enjoy the first episode of “Jerad Hill’s Secret Public Network Marketing Podcast!”

Forward Your iPhone VoiceMail to Your Google Voice

One Voicemail To Rule Them All! – Gone are the days of checking multiple voicemails.

For years now I have used Phonetag.com, originally named Simulscribe to transcribe my voicemails. Up until Google recently updated their transcription service Phonetag.Com had them beat hands down. It was also easier to use Phonetag because they were a voicemail service and not a new phone number. I was a lucky early beta adopter of the Google Voice service and actually really like it. I use my Google Voice phone number, but mostly as a message line. With recent updates Google Voice has made plus the Google Chrome plugin that makes it really easy to access your voicemails, I have wanted to make Google Voice my primary Voicemail line, so here is how I did it.

I have an iPhone and a Google Nexus One Phone. The Nexus One is easy to set up for use with Google Voice. There is a setting right in the phone, you switch it on and it’s good to go. With the iPhone it is a bit more challenging.

To set up your iPhone to forward all voicemails directly to Google Voice with out using additional minutes or data you will need to do the following.

Step 1:
On you iPhone (or any GSM-based phone), pull up the keypad and type the following, substituting 1234567890 with your 10-digit Google Voice/GrandCentral account:
*61*1234567890#
To deactivate the forwarding and return to regular visual voicemail enter ##61# and hit call.

If you are on AT&T in the US then I suggest using these settings which will forward not only your regular voicemail but your busy voicemail as well (This is the option I use personally).
*004*1234567890*11#
To deactivate the forwarding and return to regular visual voicemail enter ##004# and hit call.

Step 2:
Log in to your Google Voice account and turn on Do Not Disturb mode. You will want to do this so that when your iPhone forwards to your Google Voice after the typical five or so rings, it will not go through the five or so rings it would take Google Voice before the voicemail picked up. Do Not Disturb sends the incoming call directly to voicemail.

That’s it. All unanswered calls to your iPhone will instantly be dropped in to your Google Voice voicemail.

Tip: You will need to disable any linked phones you have set up on your Google Voice account. If you do not do this, the phone will ring 2-3 additional times before it goes to voicemail resulting in a total of 7-8 or more rings before the caller actually reaches voicemail.

The only problem is that this will make your Google Voice account nothing but a voicemail. Of course you can still use your Google Voice phone number, but if someone calls it, the call will go directly to voicemail.

If you still want access to your Google Voice number then I suggest you set up an additional Google Voice account and use that account for your voicemail. This could get a little confusing to set up and I don’t want to get into those details.

How to easily access your Google Voicemail on the iPhone:

Accessing your Google Voice voicemail is easy on the iPhone. There are two ways to do this.

First Option: Open Safari, go to http://google.com/voice, click on the “+” at the bottom menu in Safari, tap “Add to Home Screen”. Then click add. This will add a shortcut to your home screen that will launch Google Voice in Safari. On occasion you may need to use your password to re-enter Google Voice.

Second and Way Better Option: Use the VoiceCentral app. Because Apple is currently blocking native apps that work with services such as Google Voice there is a work around. Visit http://voicecentral.riverturn.com from your iPhone and choose the free version. The paid version removes ads and has a few minor feature additions but the free version will do you just fine. Once you install and set up this app you will be able to access your Google Voice with great ease. I really like the app and have been using it since they released it.

If you are using the Google Chrome browser on your Mac or PC computer there is a nifty plugin that will add your Google Voice voicemail and transcribed voicemails to an easy to access button. Being that I spend 75% of my day in a web browser it makes it much easier for me to access voicemail that way.

From what I understand, it is easy to forward your other phones to point voicemail to Google Voice as well. You can Google search your way to those answers as I do not have a land line to do testing on.

If you have any questions about Google Voice or how to use it with your devices feel free to comment me in the box below. I will answer your questions on my blog so that they are available for everybody to read should they have the same question.

One Voicemail To Rule Them All!

State of the Internet and Digital Media

It is amazing what the internet has became over the years. Everything moves at the speed of light online, it is hard to keep up. There are a few things in the video that I would like to point out. I will note them below.

JESS3 / The State of The Internet from JESS3 on Vimeo.

The amount of malicious intent on the internet is getting worse by the day. This is why you need to make sure you have your computer checked out at least every six months by a professional. By professional I mean somebody who does this for a living. Not your brother-in-law who thinks he knows everything. If you need a referral to a reputable IT professional, contact me and I will hook you up.

The social web and online media is growing by leaps and bounds. Everything is becoming more interconnected. I urge you to think wisely about what you share online. The opinion that people have about you is no longer generated based on real life encounters with you, it is now predominately based off of what they see you sharing about yourself online. Rebuilding your reputation is going to become near impossible due to ones past being easily searchable online. If you have already caused a mess for yourself and need help clearing it, I can give you some ideas on how to clear some of it up, at the very least burry it. Always save your passwords somewhere safe. Use an email address from a provider that will not delete your email if you cancel service with them. For example, use Gmail for your email instead of Comcast. If you cancel your Comcast service then you will lose your email and will not be able to cancel your online accounts.

Just some suggestions. It’s going to be interesting to see how the web shapes peoples lives over the next 10 years.

Everything You Need to Know About the Value of Social Media Sites

With all of the self proclaimed “social networking experts” out there it is hard to decide who to believe and trust. Most of them want money from you in trade for what they call their “experience”. However what makes me smile is that almost none of these people have any business experience at all. If they do, it’s not any experience that has yielded something they could brag about. How does one decide who to trust to direct your business in the most public display of communication that your company has ever engaged in? Which social media sites do you participate in and why? To be an expert in something you must have experience. I have never found that one person has had all of the right answers.

For years now I have been using these sites to build SEO for my websites and expand my personal brand. I have been posting articles to StumbleUpon and Digg for years and have seen great results, posting images to Flickr and communicating through Twitter and Facebook. These sites have been huge contributors to the traffic many of my websites receive. There are many different social media websites, each of them with a different purpose.

While browsing around online I came across a single PDF Roadmap that explains everything in plain english. You can download a large PDF here (right click, save target/file as). Drew McLellan put this beautiful breakdown together and it’s content is very sound. As I explained before, different social media sites help with different functions of your purpose and brand. Use it to figure out where to post which types of media for the best results.

It is not rocket science, it just takes someone to put it all together in plain english. If you do not have accounts on these websites, get them. If your website is not set up with buttons such as the buttons you see below for sharing content, then contact your website designer and have them added. Encourage your readers to share your content if they enjoyed it. And please for the love of all that is sacred, stop encouraging the talking heads out there, take initiative and do it yourself.

Finding tools like the CMO Social Landscape help me continue to get better at promoting myself, my business and the content I create.

Tutorial: Foursquare, Gowalla, Yelp and Brightkite for Small Business Owners

The other day I posted an audio blog about using social location sharing apps to promote your business. I decided to walk through the apps on my iPhone to give you an example of how to do this. The apps I suggest using in the video are Foursquare, Gowalla, Yelp and Brightkite.

The great thing about location sharing is that everybody is doing it right now and it’s free. Get a little creative and figure out how you can drive new business using these free services. I believe location sharing services will only get more popular over the next year, so get an early start.

On Yelp you can customize your listing, add details and photos. My business, Jerad Hill Studios, is listed on Yelp and I have customized my listing to provide information for people who have never heard of my business before.

I would love to hear how you are using Social Location Sharing Services to promote your business. Please share your thoughts and ideas in the comment box.

Competing With Endless Options

The world sure has changed a lot in the last 15 years. Like so many, I am from a city where local business used to thrive. When I was a child we had very few large stores, in fact they were called department stores then. Today we call them big box stores who bring us endless choices. While growing up there were not many options compared to today. The Walmart movement ushered in the large stores that have it all, corporate stores that have options. This made it near impossible for local business to keep up. There is no way to provide the flexibility to the customer that a large store can and still afford to pay rent. I watched as local business after local business closed down shortly after it’s bigger corporate replacement moved into town. It has even effected the bridal industry.

A few years ago I watched as David’s Bridal came to Modesto. This really hurt the strong local market that Modesto had for formal wear. Several bridal boutiques closed their doors because they could not compete with the discount formal wear provider. The only local boutiques left standing are the smaller specialists. The same goes for electronics, appliances, furniture and more.

During the holidays my Mother gift wraps for a locally owned retailer I have decided not to call out by name that has been in Modesto for many years. My Grandmother worked at this retailer for 35 years. This retailer is where you go in Modesto for fine china, beautiful decor and housewares items. They are known for their beautiful Christmas displays. They are much nicer than Macy’s, which we also had in Modesto for many years.

Earlier today my Mother was explaining to me that they had not had many Brides register for 2010 compared to years in the past. She said everybody is going to Macy’s. In the past this local store was the place to register when it came to fine china and the best housewares. Their location in Modesto is what you would call Modesto’s higher end shopping center. Everything in McHenry Village is fancy and a bit pricey, but it’s really nice stuff. I do not believe that their lack of registries has anything to do with there being less weddings going on, or people spending less money. I think it has to do with options.

When my wife and I got married we registered at Macy’s and Bed Bath and Beyond. I was not really into the whole fine china idea so the retailer I have been speaking of didn’t even cross my mind. What did cross my mind is that if we registered at Macy’s and ended up with extra stuff to return, we could get gift cards and buy clothes. My Wife and I live in a 3 bedroom 3 bathroom home, but it has a small kitchen. We just don’t have room for a bunch of housewares. Though I would love to have a big KitchenAid Mixer (ad) on my counter next to other fancy stuff that makes it appear that all we do is cook at home, I knew it was not going to fit so we didn’t register for it. Despite the easy to read registry, we still ended up with multiples of some items. With the gift cards that we obtained from the returns we were able to get a few clothing items we really wanted.

I know that there are options when it comes to returns. Most stores allow you to return something and exchange it for something else. However when your store is a specialty store, it limits the possibilities that a person would have should they end up with a credit to the store. How can a specialty fine housewares store compete with a store that has similar items but also has awesome jeans and shoes?

How does a local business win over customers when options are what people are looking for and from the outside looking in, corporate competition has the advantage?

Since we have been talking about this local retailer, lets use them as an example. I am using them as an example because I believe in local business and supporting those in my community. You could also say that this retailer has been a big part of my life being that my family has been such a big part of them as well, over the years.

Looking at what I know about their business I understand that they are the premier store for fine china and home goods in Modesto. Their clientele is a bit older and more established, maybe even more traditional then average. Their customers appreciate the staff who are specialists in what they sell. What are some of the stumbling blocks that they are probably facing?

  • Younger generation is more tech savvy. They research what they want online first and can find it on their own.
  • More players in the game then there was 10 years ago which has created more options for the customer.
  • People are spending less right now due to the recession.
  • Needs have changed over the years. More households are dual income which means less time spent in the kitchen.
  • Younger generation is making more decisions on their own. Priorities are different.

Here are some ideas that I think can help local business thrive not only in this economy but in the ever changing attitude that people have about options and flexibility in spending.

Incentives
Incentives are a great way to get business when you don’t have the options your competitor can provide. Incentives can be free items, addons or package deals. From recent home good purchases I have made myself I understand that many vendors have rewards and incentives for purchasing their products or spending a certain amount on their brand. There are many ways that a store can offer incentives with out it costing them a lot of money especially when the vendors have programs they can offer. I think one of the biggest misconceptions that business owners have is that by offering incentives it will effect their bottom line. What they forget is that an incentive is not a giveaway. An incentive is something that is given once the customer has spent money. This means that if the customer chooses to spend money based on your incentive then this is a sale you would not have received otherwise. We justify spending money on advertising the same way. Even if the incentive means offering up something free, it is a sale you may not have had otherwise. Free gift wrap service is not a strong enough incentive anymore. If your competition also offers it then it’s no longer an incentive, it’s whats expected.

The big box stores have their incentives, but as a consumer I still find them hard to understand. I have a Bestbuy rewards card, and I spend some coin at Bestbuy. I have something like 5,000 whatever points but I have no idea what those will get me. I get coupons in the mail which I assume are offers that cater to what Bestbuy believes I am most interested in. However I never use them and probably never will until they make them easier to understand. Like many others I am to busy to spend time figuring out how I can make the best use of my Bestbuy rewards, if they are rewards at all. The problem many of these large stores have is that their incentives are to hard to understand. I wonder if any of the employees at Bestbuy could explain even the basics of it to me. I would guess not.

If you make your incentives unique and easy to understand you will win over new business. The simplicity of it allows people to “get it” in a world where so much is spoken over our heads to keep us from asking to many questions.

Lastly, make these incentives known. They are no good to the outside world if they have to come into your store to hear them. Integrate yourself into the places where people are online and share your offerings with them.

Promote Where The People Are
I was sent this video earlier today. It is about how Ikea engaged with Facebook users to market their products directly to potential customers. The story made it all over the web. Even though it was Ikea that did this, I am sure that it was someone on the local level that came up with the idea. Corporations just don’t come up with great ideas like this because they have to run it through all of their bureaucratic hoops. How can you promote your products or services to potential customers in your local community? Facebook is a great tool for marketing right now with it’s ever-growing membership.

Cross Promote with other local businesses that have a similar customer base. Using our local fine home goods store as an example. Where do the husbands of their typical female customer spend their time and money? Is it at the local country club or upscale fitness center? What organizations are your customers involved in such as Chamber of Commerce, Business Networking Organizations or Rotary Clubs? How can you get involved and tie your business into what the people in your community are doing with their time?

Keep It Simple
If you have heard anything from this article it’s my desire for keeping it easy to understand. The one thing that the emasculating commercials of our time have right is that guys often don’t pay catch on unless it’s plain and clear in front of us. The truth of the matter is that if we are not actively looking for it we don’t know we need it. It is your job as a local retailer to figure out where the big box stores are unable to think. They can think big but when you aim broad you miss the specific targets. If you can find the specific targets that are not being met in your area, you will succeed.

Success isn’t found, it’s Built

The different ways we view success in America makes me laugh. The viewpoint we are shown is usually through the eyes the media or some other platform wishes to show us and it always makes it look so glamorous. Apparently people just wake up and are successful according to what we are shown. All of the sudden they are engulfed in resources, decision makers and the spotlight. Success must just smile upon whomever it wishes right? Nothing could be further from the truth. However I do believe you can wake up one day and will yourself into being successful. I am going to provide some insight as to what I believe success is and then give you a few thoughts on how to set yourself up to be more successful not only in your eyes but in the eyes of others. Many times during my years as a website designer and wedding photographer I have had to readjust my thinking. It is an ongoing process.

Success is measured in so many different ways. What you consider as achieving success may be something completely different to me. Success to you may be having a certain amount of money in the bank, owning a certain size home, a nice car, providing for your family, and the list can go on. Of course that view of success could be considered very ambitious by some or modest by others. Though there is a definition for the word success, there is no concise definition for success as a concept.

A picture of success is painted for us during our school years and growing up. We are told what reaching successfulness is in school and most of us have had a friend or two in our lives who came from a much more successful family then ours. In school we are shown that a student that achieves good grades, prepares for college, attends college and graduates is a successful person. However I know graduates with their masters who are not happy with the level of success they thought they would be achieving shortly after graduating. I have found that following the suggested path of success others provide is not always a recipe for achieving it. It has to be more intentional then that.

I opted not to continue with my education through the standard channels our society suggests. I struggled with Jr. College for a few years and threw in the towel. I like to get to the point. I want to know what I need to know to get the task done. In the age that we are living in, all data is available online. The careers that require a degree these days are thinning. In most forms of technology, schools can not keep up so in my opinion it almost defeats the purpose. School can lay a good ground work and show the rest of the world you were disciplined but it can also become a crutch that prevents you from achieving success if you assume that an education is going to provide you success.

I have came to realize that when I wake up in the morning it is me and me alone that sets the stage for how my life is going to go for the rest of that day. My perception of myself, my circumstances and the world around me determines my level of productivity for the day. When I get a bad night sleep or dwell to long on something negative it can effect everything around me. It effects my work, my attitude, my family and me physically.

Here are some things that I do to maintain success and productivity in my life:

1. Turn off the noise!
Noise can be anything that is distracting you. Noise in this case is a noun; a person, place or thing that is distracting you from getting to where you want to be.

  • Person: Turn off people who have a crab mentality. The term “crab mentality” is used to describe a kind of selfish, short-sighted thinking which runs along the lines of “if I can’t have it, neither can you.” As a general rule, an accusation of having a crab mentality is a poor reflection on someone’s personality. This concept references an interesting phenomenon which occurs in buckets of crabs. If one crab attempts to escape from a bucket of live crabs, the other crabs will pull it back down, rather than allowing it to get free. Sometimes, the crabs seem almost malicious, waiting until the crab has almost escaped before yanking it back into the pot. All of the crabs are undoubtedly aware of the fact that their fate is probably not going to be very pleasurable, so people are led to wonder why they pull each other back into the bucket, instead of congratulating the clever escape artist. It is quite often that we will find people in our lives that will stifle our growth and ability to succeed. If you find yourself with people like this in your life, they will do nothing but try to make it hard for you unless you put some space between you and them. If I listened to the people who were placed in my life as a child that were there to mold me into an educated adult I would have completely set myself up to fail, just as I was told I would.
  • Place: Get away from places and locations that have overwhelming memories of negativity. Sometimes just being in a certain place can stifle your productivity and make you feel like you are part of something negative. This mentality will ruin your ability to see yourself as someone of worth. When you associate yourself with negative surroundings it is impossible to view yourself as successful in the midst of something that brings such negativity to your mind. I am not saying that you need to move to get out of such a place, but you do need to find a way that you can view yourself as a successful person rather then a failure. People often move thinking that they can start new and their problems follow them. With the internet being so socially connected it is even harder these days for a location change to put much distance between you and past decisions. Sometimes places are people go hand in hand. It is most likely that the places that bother you are associated with people. Below I will discuss living visibly which will help shine more light on making the most out of your location.
  • Thing: Things are most often bad habits and addictions but can easily be related to people and places. The things in our life that are stifling our growth to success are often related to another person. If you can put distance between the person related usually the thing will diminish.

2. Constantly Seek Empowerment
If you just sat around and listened to the world’s buzz for an entire day you would be the exact oposite of empowered. A great thing about the age we live in is that there is a lot of resources available to us. In my life I surround myself with positive content from podcasts, audiobooks and most importantly my church. I read a recap of the news to keep up with what is going on around me but I do not get attached to it. I read it through an RSS reader and do not include images. I want to be informed enough about our society to be able to hold a conversation but not so informed that I allow it to drag me down. Besides listening to great audiobooks and audio podcasts I also enjoy music. Music lifts me up and clears my mind. When I am at the gym I turn it up loud in my ears which keeps everything else out. When I am driving in the car or find myself in the middle of some downtime with nothing to do I put on an audiobook or podcast. There are so many great people who have positive attitudes and a lot to say in this world. Many of these people have overcame negativity or some sort of stronghold to reach success. There is absolutely nothing wrong with listening to what they have to say. Of course I don’t think that we should take everything that every “talking head” out there has to say to heart but you can take it in, think about it, and disregard anything that you do not think is of use to you personally. You can even take it one step further and keep those bits of information in your mind registries as something you could use to help out someone else should you see them in a situation that seems more fitting.

Some podcasts I frequent include: Freelance Radio, The Official BNI Podcast, The Public Speakers Quick and Dirty Tips Podcast, Mars Hill Sermon Church Audio Podcast, You Look Nice Today – A Journal of Emotional Hygiene and many more.

3. Live Visibly/Transparently
When your life as an adult does not start out the way you wanted it to you can correct it. I have had multiple failures that I often wish I had seen coming but at the same time understand that my mistakes have made me who I am. When things come up about your past, don’t be afraid to address them. There is no reason to hide anything because it will come out. What is great about the web these days is that you can share your life online on a much larger stage then you could with out it. Using Facebook, Twitter and the other social networks allows people to watch your life as it happens. They get to know you and see what you are really all about. When and if they find out something from your past it will not weight as heavily as it would have if that was the first bit of information they had collected about you. So regardless of your past whether it be that you were a burnout in high school or partied away your college years, you can get past that perception that some may have and build the life you have always wanted to have resulting in the respect you have desired to obtain.

4. Give Back
I say give back but what I really mean is just give. Be a giver, and never think twice about why you are helping someone. I give a lot of advice to people looking to get into the photography and website design fields. People wonder why I do it, especially when they are in the same geographic location as me. I believe completely that people do business with people they like. Some people like me and the way I do things, others do not. There are other photographers and website designers out there that may be a better match for a client than I am. I also refer more wedding photography away to other photographers than I keep for myself. Sometimes because I am already booked but many times because I know that what the Bride is looking for is something another photographer could provide better than I could. I have my style and enjoy working with people who have similar styles to mine. I feel I am offering much more to the Bride by making sure that she gets exactly what she wants.

Don’t be afraid to share information. Trust me, it comes back to you 10 fold when you give something away with no interest in getting something back from it. When you share something with someone else, send them business or give them a jump start, you may not see a reward from that particular individual, but you will get love in return. It always happens this way and it is the number one reason why I am still in business today.

5. Be a lover!
The sourpuss never gets ahead. They are always complaining about how they felt it was their turn to be successful. They always look jealously at others and scoff at their success. This should not be how you handle things. When somebody you know has something notable happen in their life, celebrate it with them. Congratulate them and appreciate their hard work. It is hard to pay attention to what everybody has going on but many people share their milestones on their Facebook and Twitter. Be on the lookout for those moments and send some love their way. When I fellow photographer posts about how they just booked a new wedding, it’s time to post a celebratory post on their Facebook wall. When a website designer contact I have on Twitter talks about how they just got this new huge client, it’s time to celebrate that with them, rather then lean back in your chair and think about how much you deserved that over them.

Life is to short to be a hater. Yes I know that the term is overused and pretty cliche but it’s true. Haters will never prosper. Be a love giver instead in the purest of senses from your heart of hearts.

Now That I’m 30…

Turning 30 is much more of a milestone then turning 21 or even 25 for that matter. I am sure most start to think about what they have accomplished so far in life and what they plan to accomplish when they hit this age. I have been reflecting all day on the last 10 years of my life. I feel that every moment that I have experienced in life has made me who I am today, the good and the bad. I don’t at all believe in the 5, 10, 15, and 20 year plan that was crammed down my throat in school. I recognize setting goals and attempting to achieve them. My early 20’s were a real challenge of character and faith. I made a lot of mistakes during those years but am very happy about how things have ended up.

I have made some amazing friends in the last 10 years, started walking with God again, started three successful businesses, closed one, got married and have a baby on the way. I am truly blessed and believe completely that when you in line with God’s will for your life and make proper use of the gifts that have been given you, anything can be accomplished.

I am very excited about the next 10 years of my life. I will be growing my family, learning to do more with less, write at least two books, meet new people and make new friends. As far as business goes I plan to continue freeing up my work life so I can work in more exciting places and locations then I already have.

I would also like to thank all of the people who have been a part of my life from the short connections to the long term friends. Everybody who I have came in contact with has taught me something different. I love to learn and am blessed that God puts such awesome people in my path.
