Actively Listening In Social Networks

I know that most of you have had it up to hear with people telling you how you can find business in the social networks but hear me out. If you listen for the right cues you will notice that people are asking for your help, they just don’t know it. We naturally want to help people. In real life it is awkward to interject our thoughts into a conversation we were not invited into. Online we have the opportunity to make suggestions through private emails or direct messages. Watch my latest video where I share thoughts and ideas on how to find referrals for yourself and other people in your contacts list through online social networks.

Why You Need A Free DropBox Account

Dropbox is software that syncs your files online and across your computers. It also serves many other functions. Let me describe how I use Dropbox and how I think it can benefit you.

Backup

This is the number one reason I use Dropbox. I am the king of backup. In the past I have lost content and resources due to hard drive failure. Even to this day I replace hard drives once a year, before they get to old. For important content I use Dropbox to back up instantly.

When I get back to my office from a wedding, the first thing I do is copy the images from my memory cards to my Dropbox folder on my computer. Dropbox quickly begins syncing that data to their servers. Should anything happen to my computer and the memory cards, I can download the backed up images from Dropbox.

I keep all of my current web design data in a Dropbox folder. Not only do I want to make sure that data is backed up in case of hardware failure but I also want to be able to access it anytime, from any computer. Dropbox allows you to access your data from their website.

iPhone Access

I like to have as much information with me as possible. I sync my contract agreements, documents I access frequently, a w9 that I often have to send companies I work with and many other files with Dropbox. I do this so I can use their Free iPhone App to access those files at any time. I can send a secure public download link to any file in Dropbox directly from my iPhone. If a client needs a copy of their contract, I can send it right away.

I keep my favorite images in my Dropbox folder so I can share them with people on the go. I simply launch the Dropbox iPhone app and I can browse images just like they are on my iPhone with out them taking up space on my iPhone.

File Sharing

Like I mentioned before, Dropbox allows you to share files. You can share anything from simple Word documents to Images and Videos! If you have ever tried to send a large file through email and had it bounce back you can use Dropbox instead.

File Sharing with Dropbox

A free Dropbox account includes 2GB which is a lot of storage for simple files such as images, pdfs and word docs. Dropbox will also create an online image gallery you can share with others. Simply place a folder of images in your Dropbox folder and you can share a gallery with anyone you choose to send the link to.

Share iTunes Music

I am currently working copying music to my Dropbox folder and linking it to my iTunes Library. First I need to get rid of some old music I have put in iTunes from old CDs. I have about 90GB of music that I have collected over my years, much of it I never listen to anymore. Once I get it down to about 50GB then I will upgrade my Dropbox account to the 100GB account and copy my iTunes Library over. Assuming you have a much smaller music library, you can copy your music to a Dropbox folder and keep multiple computers in sync with the same music. My wife will love this as she is always mad when my computer is in sleep mode and she can’t access my shared iTunes Music.

Syncing Data

I currently only use one computer but I am in the market for another and will be using Dropbox on both computers. I have also setup 3 of my web clients with Dropbox because they wanted to be able to access data from their offices on their home computers and laptops. Dropbox is way cheaper than a Gotomypc account. If you only need to share data and not applications then Dropbox is the only way to go.

How Does A 70 Year Old Company Stay Relevant?

They create great, short, compelling media that is relevant to their brand and inject it into the social web where us users can see it. I’m talking about Old Spice, which when I was young had a bad wrap for being the after shave and cologne that your Grandfather wears. They embrace this by saying: “If your grandfather hadn’t worn it, you wouldn’t exist.” This is the tagline on their Facebook page.

They are embracing the idea that Men wear Old Spice. This feeds off of the preconceived thought that I and many like me had about Old Spice. Remember some of the other cheap colognes that we used to dowse ourselves with in junior high school? This of course being well before the age of Axe body spray which is the Stetson of the 21st century. This commercial spot, though entirely ridiculous, says exactly what it needs to say. Men wear Old Spice.

Around the web they understand that you have to stick out. In order to stick out you have to catch people off guard.

Old Spice Facebook Ad

This Facebook ad alone was the tipping point that led me to write this blog post.

Old Spice knows that they are “OLD” and that they are/were known as Grandpa’s brand. What do guys under the age of 30 struggle with most? Being considered a “Man.” Who is a man in most people’s lives? Their Grandpa. Now these ads are not going to compel a guy to run down to Target and get himself some Old Spice deodorant but the next time one finds himself out of deodorant, Old Spice will stick out much more then the other brands. Phrases like “Because I’m a Man” and “Don’t smell like a turtle cage” will run through his head as he makes his decision to buy. I already use Old Spice deodorant so these ads just make me smile, however I still have a preconceived thought that their aftershave and cologne are for Grandpa. Maybe I should pick up a bottle next time and try it?

The purpose for posting this was to show that sometimes the best way to gain exposure is to play off what is already preconceived. Maybe your business has not been around for 70 years and has a Grandpa complex but in almost every industry there is a fun spin you could apply to what you do. Have fun with your advertising, if you don’t, people will see it and ignore it.

You can see more of their great content on their website: http://www.oldspice.com/videos/

Thoughts On Measuring Success

I have been experiencing a lot of internal dialog regarding how to calculate success and the development of goals and metrics. The fact is that it is hard to know if any of what you do it is actually working. Just because I am busy and have new business coming in does not mean it is all happening in a way that produces longevity. I strive for a lasting impression rather then some quick hype. Quick hype may result in a short bump in business but always ends up looking like a bell curve. How do you measure sustainable growth through your marketing efforts during slow times? It is hard to determine whether or not people are storing up knowledge about your product or service with plans to buy when the moment is right.

One critical reminders for all of us is that success is always best understood contextually; that is to say, that success is going to look different depending on where you are and in the context through which you’re doing business. This is why I make it really easy for people to communicate with me.

You need metrics for you business. You need goals for your business. But they don’t have to be like the other guy who’s business you admire or any of your competitors for that matter. Let the dream stay alive without you killing yourself over it because you’re not meeting or setting the goals you assume your competitors are. You need metrics in place so you have something to measure and you need to be setting goals so you have something to measure against. Those goals can be sales figures, ROI, or anything that results in forward movement. If you never make plans to measure your success you will never know how successful you actually are.

Google says Keyword Meta Tags are Not Used!

Google publicly responds to the age old question about keywords in meta tags. There has been speculation that they do not use the tags as much as they used to being that people have spent so much of the past easily spamming the system. Some of the blogs that I read and people I have talked to have said they believe that keyword meta tags have no relevance anymore. I personally have not been including meta tags in any of the websites I have created for the past 6 months now. Even with All In One SEO Pack installed on this WordPress blog I have yet to fill out keyword meta tags specifically for any of my blog posts. I am still able to obtain front page and #1 organic rankings. Now my suspicions have been confirmed that they do not use them at all. So what does this mean for websites and seo? See my thoughts below the video.

Q: Why doesn’t Google use the keywords meta tag?
A: About a decade ago, search engines judged pages only on the content of web pages, not any so-called “off-page” factors such as the links pointing to a web page. In those days, keyword meta tags quickly became an area where someone could stuff often-irrelevant keywords without typical visitors ever seeing those keywords. Because the keywords meta tag was so often abused, many years ago Google began disregarding the keywords meta tag.

What does this mean for my website today?
This means that it is much more important that the content of your website be on topic and keyword rich. Keywords don’t need to be used in your meta tags, but they need to be used in your content, title and header tags. Meta Tags are invisible to the eye when looking at a website which is why they were used to try to spoof search engines for so many years. Content, titles and header tags can be seen by the eye and this is why Google is using the data found in those items to rank websites instead. Nobody is going to talk about something that has nothing to do with their business or purpose on their website.

Q: Should you use keyword meta tags just in case?
A: It sure doesn’t hurt, I would not waste your time. If any of my websites or clients websites have keyword meta tags it is because they were added quite some time ago and they are not hurting anything by staying there.

What does this mean for other search engines?
I believe that most of the other major search engines are ranking sites in a similar way to Google. They understand that reading keyword meta tags is web 1.0 (pardon the cliche).

What should I do to get better ranking?
Take a good look at your websites content and make sure it is easy to read, well organized and rich with keywords that would be used to describe your product or service.

How I Social Network Like A Pro and Still Have A Life

Over the years I have amassed many social network profiles. Every time a new one would start up, I would join. You never know what the next big thing is going to be. All it takes is the right people joining and it’s popular overnight. The question I often get is how do I stay connected to all of them and make sure I keep current with my updates? It’s simple, I use Ping.fm. Check out this video where I describe how I do it and how you can set it up yourself for free.

Viewzi.Com – Visual Search Engine

Came across this really cool way to search the web. It’s called Viewzi.Com and it brings in Google search results in a very useful way. My favorite views are the powergrid and timeline views. If you spend a lot of time on the web such as I do, you can use this tool to see a more visual perspective as to where you show up. I had some fun searching for items such as the iPhone and Canon 5D MKII.

How To Use Video In Email To Increase Click Rate

I love using video to get my point across. For me it is much easier then writing or typing. With inexpensive video equipment you can create decent videos to share with your intended audience. Due to the Youtube craze video has became much more of our daily life. Youtube alone serves up over 1.2 billion video files per day. Crazy right? Sounds like an opportunity to me. So if people are reading less and viewing more, one would assume that video is the best way to get a short message across. In this article I am going to walk you through how to take your video and distribute it to a targeted audience.

This last week I attended a bridal show as a vendor. I had a booth set up with my work on display. Sad thing is that I don’t have a decent photo of it to show you. Trust me though, it was a clean set up. The bridal show directors had asked me if I would shoot their runway fashion show which pulled me away from my booth leaving my wife and assistant there to meet new clients. Those of you who know me know how personable I am and that missing an opportunity to meet people face to face is a big deal. After the bridal show the vendors were all given lists of the attendees including contact information and email address. An old school mentality would suggest that I open Photoshop and create a fancy snail mailer to send to these 100 brides who are currently planning their weddings that will take place between this year and 2011. Since I live in “the now” I decided to put together a short video to send to these brides.

The problem with video in email is that I have no clue or control over what my email recipients will be viewing their email in. If they are on a Mac or a newer PC I could embed or attach the video into the email and it would show up and play right from with in the email. Since I do not want to leave it up to chance I will take a different approach. The last thing I want a bride to see is an email with a bunch of video embed code in it, which of course would look very unprofessional and warrant a click to the delete key. However, inserting images into email is not new technology and is supported by most email clients installed on computers over the last several years. Even email browser solutions such as Gmail and Hotmail allow for images to be embedded using HTML code. You are probably wondering why I am talking about images when I have already mentioned that I recorded a video. We are going to use a still frame from the video to embed in our email as an image. That image will link to our video which will be embedded in a website. When the email recipient clicks on the image in our email in an attempt to play the video, the Video URL that the image is linked to will open up in a web browser and the video will play. I may have just confused you so bare with me.

So now that we have decided that we will be embedding an image into our email instead of a video I will explain how this is going to work.

Recording Your Video
This tutorial is not going to explain how to shoot a video, upload it to your computer, edit it and place it online. There are tutorials all over the web for that. Do some Google searching to find some how to videos on video capture and editing.

Where Should I Upload My Video?
I have chosen to embed the video into my website. You can upload your video to Youtube if you do not care who sees this video. If you only want people to see the video that received this email or landed on your website I would suggest you use Vimeo. In a Vimeo account you can set privacy settings to your video only allowing it to play with in your website. The video will not be able to be found on Vimeo.Com, it will remain private on their website. I explain the process of setting up private video in another tutorial called, “Using Vimeo To Embed Private Video On Your Website.”

Should I Use An Email Campaign Management Service?
I use MailChimp.Com. Mailchimp is the best email campaign marketing solution I have found to date. Their system is easy to use. In a matter of minutes you can set up an email list by importing the recipients email addresses and set up a custom email campaign. MailChimp offers a free account to try out their services. The free account allows you to send emails up to 500 people. For the first month I used MailChimp I had a free account. Now I am at their first payment plan level which is $30. I am managing over 1500 email addresses in 6 different lists. $30 is not bad for what I am getting. Also, from what I understand, if you use this link and sign up. MailChimp will credit your account $30 and my account $30.

MailChimp: “Every time you refer new MailChimp customers, we’ll add $30 in MonkeyReward credits to their account, and to your account. Everybody wins!”

The reason I use a Email Campaign Management Service, such as MailChimp, is that you get reporting back on how your email campaign is doing. Most of the services out there also provide a web version of your email if for some reason they can not view it correctly in a browser. This is important for our friends who are still rocking older versions of Windows. Like I said before, I do not want to leave my emails up to chance. Mailchimp is always testing to make sure that the emails sent will display correctly. If you really want to take your marketing serious I suggest you get a MailChimp account today. All of my marketing related emails are Powered by MailChimp!

Let’s Get Started!

Step 1: Open Your Video In A Media Player.
We are going to grab a single frame from the video which will be the image we will include in our email campaign. There are a few ways to accomplish this. You can get just a still frame from the video in most video editors. Do a Google search to see how to do this in your video editor. I decided to open my video in Quicktime on the Mac. I decided to grab a screen capture of the Quicktime Video window which would prompt a person to click as if it would play. I opened the video, scrobbled to the frame I wanted to save as an image and used the following keyboard shortcut: “Command Shift 4” Once you do this you will see your cursor change to a small target. Mouse over the Quicktime video and hit the spacebar. You will now see the target turn into a small camera. Click on the Quicktime video window and a snapshot of that window will be saved to your desktop. I am sure the PC works a bit different so if you are on a Windows machine and figure out how to do this, please post it in the comments section below.

I took my snapshot of the video and opened it in Photoshop, added a drop shadow to make it pop and saved it as a JPG. This is completely optional however I do suggest that you resize the image so it fits the width of your email and that you save it as a JPG. The screen capture that the Mac will give you is a PNG file. Our friends on older PC’s will not be able to view PNG files.

dqvideoemail

Step 2: Create A New Email Message in MailChimp.
After you create your MailChimp account I suggest watching their video tutorials that will teach you everything you need to know about using their service. Remember, it’s free.
Link: http://www.mailchimp.com/support/videos/

Step 3: Test Your Email
MailChimp allows you to send a test email. I suggest you do this. Here is a snapshot of what my email looks like so far.

dqeventemail

Step 4: Send or Schedule Your Email
Another nice option with MailChimp is the ability to schedule emails to send at a later date. I have set my email to send to my recipient list at 7am so it will be at the top of the list in their mailbox when they check their email in the morning.

The link image link that we created in the email to look like a video will actually open up the video in a browser. Go ahead and give it a try. Click the image below this text, it will operate the same way from with in the email by opening up in a new browser window.

Remember to sign up for MailChimp to get a free membership and a $30 credit to your account. Click the MailChimp logo below to sign up and start working on your email campaigns right away.

Just Finished Installing Snow Leopard

Well I just installed Snow Leopard. Despite the 58 minutes it quoted at the beginning of the install process, it ended up taking about 30 minutes. My laptop was pretty warm after the install, however it was sitting on a couch so that may have played a part in it. Here is an article from MacWorld.Com outlining the major feature upgrades included in Snow Leopard.

After the install, I restarted the laptop and received a dialog box asking me to find the SystemEvents.App file. After a few moments of looking through folders I found it: /System/Library/CoreServices/ Once I realigned the file Snow Leopard loaded the rest of the way and everything seems to be working fine.

The next issue I incurred had to do with syncing to MobileMe. When attempting to sync I receive the error that my password was incorrect. I tried accessing MobileMe settings in the control panel to change the password and upon trying to save that password received the error “there was a problem saving to your keychain.” What I figured out is that all you need to do is go into your User account in System Preferences and change your password. When you do that you will get a dialog box letting you know that this new password will also be your keychain password. Before changing your password, make sure you quit Keychain. You can change your password right back to what it was if you wish, just make sure Keychain is closed when you do it. If the problem persists you can delete the MobileMe or .Mac entries in your Keychain as well. The only problem with deleting those entries is that the next time you do connect to MobileMe it will see your mac as a new system and you will have to sync everything again. So when it asks make sure you click replace info on MobileMe, not your computer. I have found that if I try to set my MobileMe password as something different then my computers password, it will not work. In the past I had different passwords for MobileMe and my Macbook Pro but I guess I can’t do that anymore.

My Macbook Pro also seems to be hyper sensitive and will not stay in screensaver mode. With in seconds after going into screensaver, the password screen pops up to unlock my display. This was frustrating to me earlier today while at a Bridal Trade Show. I was trying to display images in screensaver mode but was unable to because the slideshow kept turning off. Even turning off the required password would just bring my desktop back. Not sure at all what could be causing this issue. I turned off my Wifi to see if a network was interfering. Not sure what is causing this. This is a persistent issue still here after restarting.

When I opened Mail, it required a database update that took about 10 minutes, but I have a pretty large database. I save a lot of email.

Firefox seems to run about the same, still lagging at times when I have more then 6 tabs open.

I am really bummed that my Menu Bar called iStat that shows me my system resources on the fly won’t load. I also have the dashboard widget installed so now I will just have to look at the dashboard widget to see my resources.

Running Photoshop and Lightroom at the same time seem to operate a little better. Usually running both apps at the same time would bring my laptop to a crawl. Quitting one or the other would help. My Macbook is maxed out at 4GB RAM. From what I hear Photoshop CS4 is ok on Snow Leopard but earlier versions CS3 and earlier are not supported. I would check more into that before upgrading to Snow Leopard.

All applications seem to quit much faster except Firefox. Firefox always takes forever to quit for me. This may be due to extensions I have installed such as Xmarks which syncs my bookmarks off site.

I think Apple did the right thing by pricing it as low as they did. There is nothing new and exciting, just some under the hood upgrades that could have been pushed out as an update. If there is anything else exciting that happens I will update this post. Did I really need Snow Leopard? Probably not, but come on you know me better then that 😉

Feel free to share your thoughts on Snow Leopard in the comments.

Must have iPhone Apps for Website Designers

Those of you who know me, know that I have been through more iPhone Apps than the average person. I have used and reviewed many iPhone Apps on my website TheAppPodcast.com. The biggest issue with buying apps is knowing if they are worth the cost or not. As a website designer I use the apps listed below. I will go into short detail as to how I use them and how they benefit me as a website designer.

thingsThings: Things is a powerful ToDo app for the iPhone and Mac OSX platform. With both a desktop app and an iPhone app it makes it easy for me to keep my project lists up to date and synced between my iPhone and laptop. With Things I always know where I am with a project, which is important to know when I get a call or need to access that information on the road.

ftponthegoFTPOnTheGo: At first I was skeptical of this app because of the cheesy name but this app works great. I noticed a typo on a site I was working on when I was viewing it on my iPhone. I was able to FTP into the site, edit an html page in the editor and save the changes while connected to 3G. I was in the car waiting for my wife to get off of work. How cool is that?

It is often that my clients call me with mini fires that need putting out. This app allows me to make some quick changes on the fly. Before this I had to SSH into my website and edit pages that way. FTPOnTheGo makes this much easier.

analyticsAnalytics: This goes with out explaining. With the Analytics app for the iPhone you can view all aspects of your website analytics from Google Analytics. I have setup custom dashboards that display the information I want to see quickly. This also makes it easy for me to check in on my clients to see how their website is performing. Nice graphs and plenty of information. I have accessed this information when giving presentations and to show to my clients when spikes in traffic happen.

blogpressBlogPress: BlogPress allows you to create content on a variety of different platforms from one app. It works great with WordPress blogs and I use it to update my blog from the road. You can upload photos right into your blog post from your camera roll or take a photo and BlogPress will load it right in. If you have a Picasa album you can import images from there as well.

You can manage multiple website with this app. BlogPress supports Blogger, MSN Livespaces, WordPress, Movable Type, TypePad, Live Journal, Drupal, and Joomla.

I have also added a bookmarklet to my browser on my laptop and iPhone to quickly add websites to Instapaper when I want to save them to read at a later time.
