Amazon Cloud Player & Apple TV

I am loving Amazon Cloud Player. I have wanted to separate myself from iTunes and it’s limiting factors for a long time but have had no choice to keep using it. I love using my Apple TV which is connected to my home audio system. One of the major downsides of the Apple TV is that it does not support services such as Amazon Cloud Player or Pandora Radio. The latest Apple TV requires being connected to a network that has a computer running iTunes in order to play music unless you want to listen to Apple’s supported radio stations, which is like listening to AOL Radio (LAME).

Amazon Cloud Player

Using a neat little application called Airfoil by RogueAmoeba I am able to pipe any audio my computer puts out to an external device. Airfoil recognizes audio capable devices that are connected to your same Wifi connection. I have two devices that are capable of outputting audio. The first is an Apple TV and the other device is an Apple Airport Express.

AirFoil For Mac

As you can see in the Airfoil image, I can choose which device I would like to send my audio. I have System Audio chosen which means all audio my system puts out will be pushed to the selected device. Setting it up this way basically turns whatever my Apple TV is connected to into an external audio source for my computer. If that gets annoying you can select from the menu any application, widget or audio device connected to your computer. This is cool. Airfoil makes it possible to pass the audio through to your Apple TV, which for me is exactly what I want.

Airfoil

With Google Chrome selected, only the audio that comes out of Google Chrome will be pushed to my Apple TV. This is nice because the sound effect my email makes as well as the sounds that other applications make will no longer be heard through the speakers of my audio system.

Some applications have started to build-in this technology. My favorite radio app, Radium, has this built in. Radium gives me the option to play the audio through my computers speakers, my Apple TV or my Airport Express. Of course those options only show up because I have the devices connected to the same Wifi network as my computer.

Radium - Apple TV

The main reason that I want to be able to send my audio wireless to another device is so that I can use my Laptop with out having to plugin multiple cables. Many of you are thinking that I could have avoided all of this if I just ran an audio cable from my audio system to my computer. However that defeats the purpose of the laptop being a laptop. A laptop becomes a desktop once you have to plug in multiple cables.

So how do you build a wireless home audio system that allows you to play music from your Mac, iPhone, iPod Touch, Android Device and your iPad with out having to plug in a cable?

I will save that tutorial for an upcoming blog post.

How do you like to listen to your music? Share with me in the comments section below.

How to Create a Facebook Landing Page

Ok, so you have a Facebook page for your business or organization but it seems that nobody is clicking the “Like” button. Likes are a good thing, it affirms that people are interested in what you are offering. Getting people to click that like button is difficult because it’s not normal activity for people. When you visit a website, you are not asked to click anything unless you are interested in navigating to a different page. Only over the last several years has creating friendships required clicking a button. However, just like everything else in life, you have to ask for it. That is where a landing page comes in.

I am going to teach you how to create a landing page for your Facebook Business Page, how to install it and assign it as the first page someone will see when they come to your Facebook Page. I have also created a video that will walk you through the process.

Studioten, Photography Website and a New Server

The last 2 months have been crazy. What am I talking about, the whole year has been crazy so far. My usual slow months of January through March were not slow at all. Last month I got the wild idea to actually open a studio. This is something I threatened myself with many times over the last few years but never went through with it. I finally found a decent location at a price that didn’t make me nervous. In the matter of a few days I had keys and lots of new ideas. We completely revamped the entire place, it was super gross. I decided to call it Studioten. It is named after the suite number, which is ten. Here is a short video of us painting.

My old home office is now my Wife’s crafty space. She has been making it her own and even posted a before and after over on her blog.

I recently contracted/hired a guy to help with some of my online projects. Ben is now in charge of video reviews over at DailyAppShow.Com. This takes a huge load off of my shoulders and will allow me to grow the site and focus on other projects. Ben works with me at Studioten handling the app video reviews and will be doing other video projects for clients of mine. The new studio really took a lot more time and effort to get up then I thought it would. I imagined doing half of what I ended up doing. Ben is working on a video that shows the rest of the process of us setting up the place.

My Photography website was getting out dated. I had not changed anything there in over a year and a half, maybe longer. I had been wanting to create a site that had large full width images on the home page so that is what I did. The focus is the photography, just like it should be. Take a look and let me know what you think. I wanted to do this design update last year but I didn’t have the time available.

I now offer videography services as well. Many of you know that I have a love for video and have some experience behind me in wedding videography. My main focus over the last several years has been Wedding Photography but have recently decided to expand to offering video as well. Because my team now includes more than just myself, I have the resources needed. Check out some of our wedding videography.

Earlier this month I taught a class on the Mac. I had been wanting to teach a class for quite some time but never had a place to do it. Now that I have Studioten put together I plan to do classes more often. At the Mac Class I had 18 people in attendance which is about all the room can hold. I am excited to put together more classes and even head up some think tank sessions with some of my favorite local ideas people.

I have also partnered with United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) on a few projects and have been doing some photography and video with them. If you get a chance to visit UCP’s Modesto Office you will see photos I captured all over their halls. It was such a fun experience and I can’t wait to do more with them in the near future.

The last big thing that has been going on lately is the migration of all of my websites to a new server. This includes my clients websites. I have been on the same server for over eight years. To be honest I am very surprised at how it has performed considering how old it is. Liquidweb has been amazing over the years with their support. I have had minor issues with that server considering that it runs 24/7 to keep my clients and my own websites live. The new server will go live early at the end of the week. This server is screaming fast compared to my old server. The need for an upgrade is due to an increase in traffic on a couple of the sites I host. If you are looking for great hosting I highly recommend Liquidweb.

What’s next?

Over the next few months I will be pretty busy with weddings but I also have some plans for DailyAppShow.Com that I have been wanting to roll out. I have a few class ideas that I would like to get working on and a podcast on Photography that is long overdue.

I had a feeling that 2011 was going to be pretty cool, so far it has not disappointed. It has not been an easy year, but I am enjoying the ride.

Liam will turn one year old on June 5th and my Wife will hit quarter-life at the end of May. Pretty darn cool!

New Class: Mac Basics with Me!

Mac Basics with Jerad Hill

I have been told that I should teach a class on the Mac. Trust me, I have wanted to teach a class on the Mac for a long time. With some changes and adjustments that I have made and will be making over the next few weeks, I will not have the ability and space to do such a thing.

This will be my first class, and it will be cram packed with Mac Goodness. This class is perfect for those who are either new to Mac ownership or who have a Mac and feel that they are not using it to it’s potential. This class will also be great for those who have been thinking about switching to a Mac from a PC.

Below are the class details. This class will be held on April 7th from 6pm-9pm in Modesto. Read more below, or visit the registration page.

Introducing: Mac Basics with Jerad Hill

What is it?

It’s a 3 hour class all about the Mac with the goal of sending you away a much better and more effective Mac user. You know, one of those Mac users who just knows how to do everything on a Mac. Yeah, that will be you.

Jerad, why are you teaching a class on the Mac?

I have been using the Mac for a long time. Over the years I have figured out ways to save time and be more effective in pretty much everything I do using my Mac. Several times I week I get asked questions about the Mac. Some are from people who need help doing something and others are people who are unsure about switching to a Mac. If you are a Mac user and want to learn how to use a Mac to it’s potential, this will be a great class for you. If you are thinking about switching to a Mac but really don’t know what they are capable of doing, this class will be a great investment in your potential decision to switch.

What will I be able to do after attending?

Use your Mac more efficiently. Use more of your Mac’s features. Use iPhoto like a champ. Create cool videos in iMovie like a champ. Basically you will be a Mac Champ!

What will be covered?

  • Getting around your Mac quickly (Shortcuts, tips, tricks, do’s, dont’s)
  • Mac Basics
*Doing stuff you thought you needed a PC to do.
*File Management (Copying, Backing up, Burning Discs)
    *Email Setup, Tips & Tricks
  • Organizing files (Photos, Documents, Video, Music and More)
  • iTunes (Organizing Music, Burning CDs, iPhone/iPod Music Tips)
  • iPhone Tips & Tricks
  • iMovie Tips & Tricks
  • Organizing Your Life (Using your Mac to better organize your life)
  • Mac App Store

What should you bring?

  • Your Mac (If it is a laptop, I don’t think we will have room for Desktops)
*If you don’t have a laptop, don’t worry. Everything that will be talked about will be provided in a take home format as well.
  • A willing mind ready to learn.
  • Seriously, that is all you need to bring.

How does Jerad teach?

I’m going to stop talking in third person for a moment.

I am a very hands on learning type of person. I like to watch someone do a task and then try it myself. That is how I have found it is best to learn on the computer. I find that if I focus to much time on taking notes then my mind is not available to imagine myself doing the action. This is why I will provide you with the exact slides and notes that I use during the class for you to reference if needed. If you have a laptop, you can follow along with me. If you don’t have a laptop, you can partner up with someone who does, or jot down ideas as I show you new things.
Because this class is only three hours and I am covering a ton of stuff, I will be moving quickly through the content. This won’t be a problem because I plan to load you up with stuff so that you can revisit everything and focus more on the areas you see being most useful to you.

What is Jerad providing?

  • Super Fast Free Wifi!
  • Electricity for your computer if needed.
  • Documentation of everything we talked about.
*That way you can reference back to what was discussed if you forget how to do something.
  • Some cool software.
  • Free stuff from his developer friends.
  • Probably some cool stuff for the iPhone if you have one.
  • Refreshments (Coffee, Tea, Soda, Yellow Rockstars, Water)
  • This list will grow as the date gets closer and Jerad comes up with more cool ideas.

Kessler Pocket Dolly Test – Take 1

Not a very good test of the Kessler Pocket Dolly’s abilities but at 7pm when it’s just you and your 9 month old and his bed time is 7:30, you don’t have many options. I am excited to take this thing out and get some creative shots, perhaps at some of the spots I have taken photos at recently.

The ambient light was very low which explains the iso 3200. Sorry about that.

Shot with a Canon 60D, Canon 70-200 lens at 1/40, f2.8, iso 3200.

Guess who is in Men’s Fitness Magazine!

So I get this call from Men’s Fitness Magazine a few months ago asking if I am interested in talking about some apps. They told me that the article would be along the subject of love and romance (aka. sex). I thought, what the heck. I did a phone interview where I provided six apps that I knew about for the iPhone. Most of these apps I had already reviewed over at DailyAppShow.Com. Fast forward a few months and we have a cover page mention and 3/4 page article on apps featuring my website. Pretty cool!

In case you don’t subscribe to Men’s Fitness, check out the video.

How Not To Get Your Bank Account, Facebook, Twitter or Anything Else Hacked

Believe it or not, it is actually easier to hack into the accounts of others today then it was ten years ago. Sophisticated software can do anything these days. Several months ago I became aware of a plugin for the Firefox browser that can grab personal data from other people sharing the same Wifi connection. I did some testing and found out that it is very much true and not at all on a small level. You could be sitting in a hotel room on Wifi and someone on the complete oposite side of the hotel could grab your personal information. It’s even easier on smaller networks. Let me explain how it works.

This is going to sound weird, but websites work just like nightclubs. To get in you enter through a specific door. The person running the door (the bouncer) checks your ID. Once you are verified as being over 21 you get a stamp on your hand. That stamp allows you access, sometimes in and out access to the building. When I was young, I remember going to our local theme park where they did a very similar thing. As broke kids we would often pool our money together, one person would pay, get stamped, then come back out where we would do our best to transfer the stamp to each others hands. Give me a break, we were kids.

Websites use what is called a cookie rather then a stamp. When you log into a website, your browser is given a cookie. That cookie tells your browser that this particular computer can stay logged in so long as it remains at the current IP address and will remain active until the user clicks “logout” or the cookie expires.

Websites use two protocols, HTTP and HTTPS. You have probably seen both of these before. Most financial institutions or websites that deal with your financial information work on HTTPS which is “pretty” safe. HTTPS secures your information by encrypting it before it leaves your computer. If it is intercepted somewhere in between it would be hard to read because of the encryption. HTTP however is not encrypted at all. Using characters from Arrested Development as an example, HTTPS is like hiring ICE as a private detective and HTTP is like hiring Gene Parmesan. Notice that both are not that bright, however one is better than the other (in case you were wondering, Arrested Development is amazing, you need to watch all three seasons and morn it’s cancellation).

Most Wifi networks are not guarded. At home you are for the most part safe. It would take someone who really knows what they are doing to access your home network with out knowing your password. In public settings such as a hotel or a coffee shop it is very easy to access the cookies that are being given to another computer. This would be the equivalent to the nightclub doorman copying down the drivers license number of each person at the door and allowing others to see his notes.

There is a plugin for Firefox called Firesheep and it is dangerous. Firesheep automates the process of looking for cookies that are being passed across the network. This is very much the same as automating the process of checking hands for stamps at the door and giving it access to replicate that stamp whenever it wants. Firesheep will grab the cookie as it is being passed through the air and store it. You can then visit the website that cookie was created for, such as Paypal, Facebook, Twitter or any other website, click on the cookie in Firesheep and you are logged in as that person. You will not know their actual password but having access to the cookie will give you access to the website they logged into for as long as that cookie is valid.

THIS IS SUPER DANGEROUS!

Let me break this down into a real world example.

Example: Jane is sitting in Gnarbucks Coffee Shop with her laptop enjoying a Vente Carmel Frapp she will later regret when she can’t fit into her True Religion jeans she just bought. Because Gnarbucks has free Wifi she decides to use it to access the web. She goes to login to her bank though their website to see if the $300 pair of jeans had posted to her account yet. She goes to paybuddy.com where she enters her username and password.

Unbeknownst to her, Jack, who thinks he is cool drinking a tall half-skinny half-1 percent extra hot split quad shot (two shots decaf, two shots regular) latte with whip (what a douche). He has his Acer laptop with him which he always reminds people of how little he paid for it. He is connected to Gnarbucks free wifi, has Firefox open and Firesheep installed. He just got done posting LOLCAT pictures all over Marcie’s Facebook wall. He was able to access her Facebook account when she logged into Facebook while at Gnarbucks from her laptop. Jack notices that someone has logged into their PayBuddy account, his curiosity peaks and he decides to take a look. From what he can see it looks like Jane has some money in there. Because PayBuddy is a 100% online bank, he can see all of her personal information. He copies her name, address and phone number and opens his own “fake” PayBuddy account using a Yahoo email address he set up to look like hers. With his new PayBuddy account he also opens up a eLame Auction account, creates some fake products and sells them. With the products sold, he accepts payment for them, uses the PayBuddy account to order some stuff off of Amazon and closes the PayBuddy account a few days later.

Who do you think will get the phone call about all of this mess? Jane will! It probably won’t be hard for the bank to figure out that it is all fake but it will be a hassle. Jane may have to fill out some paperwork, she may even get emails from upset eLame customers.

This is even more common and much easier to do on Social Networks because Social Networks hired a blind person to watch their door (ie. HTTP). You also want to beware of chat messages, wall posts and links that are shared with you on social networks that don’t appear to be from the person sending them. I always ask the person if they are sending that to me or if they are hacked before I click on it. These “bots” are getting smarter and can even respond to simple questions in chat messages.

The good thing about all of this is that it is not really possible for a person to get your Social Security Number unless you have it stored in one of these accounts. Most online accounts do not store your SSN. However, smart people can get creative and figure something out, just like Jack did. Keep in mind that everything with a login is possibly at risk when you use public internet connections.

How To Protect Yourself From Firesheep Users and Other Hackers

First of all, forget using a browser such as Internet Explorer. If you are using IE you need to stop. I don’t care how cool Microsoft says it is, STOP! Use Firefox or Google Chrome. If you are using Firefox you can install a free plugin called Force-TLS which forces websites to run in HTTPS mode. For Google Chrome, get KB SSL Enforcer. Remember that this is not 100% safe, just safer. It will block Firesheep and other similar software from being able to read your login information.

The ultimate fix would be to simply just not use your computer to do anything important in a public wifi setting. This is impossible even for myself. I use my iPhone or Android Phone as the internet connection for my laptop. This assures that I am the only one connected to that network and specific IP address. If you have a smart phone that allows for internet tethering I suggest you use it.

I hope this helps you thwart unknown attempts are your personal data. The problem is that you don’t know your information is at risk until it’s to late. You may get lucky and wind up with a few unwanted LOLCAT pictures on your Facebook but it’s best to take precautionary measures whenever possible.

Should I find better solutions or more up to date information I will update this post.

How Not To Be An A-Hole Marketer

At every business related conference I end up having a conversation like this with someone so I thought I might flesh some of my thoughts out into a blog post.

I have found that there are a couple of different types of online marketers that frequent conferences, social networks and the blogs of others.

The first group are the Online Marketer A-Holes

I know you have ended up on one of their lists before. You receive several emails a week pitching something they have never actually used before but for some reason they are passionate enough about it to blow you up with emails. This type of marketer is the pushy salesman that toutes that his product will net you tons of ROI and brag about the money he has made making “satisfied customers” with whatever product he/she is pushing. Of course this can range from the typical “get rich quick” scheme to the “download my free e-book and receive a special offer” that results in scores of spam and ridiculous emails of the guy pretending to talk to you directly when he could give less of a crap who you are.

Especially online, it is easy for marketers to exploit human desires such as the desire to make tons of money. These people are the modern day equivalent of the “used car salesman” who would sell any piece of crap to a body with a pulse.

It is easy to notice these people because of how they present themselves online. Their websites look the same, they are usually one page websites called “sales landing pages” and the biggest element on the page is the cash you “should” earn. Their videos are filmed with a consumer level camera using it’s internal microphone (horrible audio) and they are wearing a teeshirt with some sort of blogging comment on it.

Then there are the Social Marketer A-Holes

In my experience this is the person who got a small amount of popularity in some space online and in person is a total A-hole who alienates people and asumes everybody knows who he/she is. They think the world is small and that their reach is wide. You should just appreciate them because they are in your presence. This person has came about because of social media thus dubbed a Social Media A-Hole. They make the mistake of thinking that their 10,000 Twitter followers are actually fans of theirs putting them at a higher level then the rest of us. Their fame is not wide, it has came because people truly believed in them for a second and now they are exploiting that attention.

So how do you keep from becoming an A-Hole Marketer?

The number one thing you can do is just care about people. It’s not rocket science and it goes back to what all of us were told by someone, probably our Mother. If you want people to like you, be genuinely interested in them. It’s hard to juggle this correctly because most of us are in business to make money. We also want to enjoy what we do and contribute something to society through our work all the while keeping a roof over our head and food in our mouths.

In most situations, marketing is what sells products. Marketing is the simple act of promoting and selling products.

Producing great content and products that actually add value is the number one goal. Promoting that content and products in a way we can feel good about but still reach our customers is the second goal.

We want to produce from the heart, but we also want to be heard, not to languish in obscurity.

To me, it’s always a work in progress. We test the limits of douchebaggery and then head back towards idealism, exploring boundaries in both directions.

To make sure we don’t swing too far in either direction, it’s important to have an anchor. This is something that keeps you in check, a compass you can refer to when you find yourself wandering.

My anchors are:

a) Focusing on being as helpful as I can possibly be to everyone I interact with

b) Being open to criticism and suggestion from both customers and peers

c) Asking myself, would I respect someone else for producing what I’ve produced? Would I respect someone else for marketing something as I’ve marketed it? Would I be a customer of my own product or a reader of my work?

What are your anchors? How do you “keep it between the ditches,” as a friend’s grandpa used to say (about driving)?

What’s your happy medium?

Let’s hear it in the comments!

Freedom to Just Be

At this moment I am sitting in the board room of the Westin in San Diego in between sessions. I am at the Online Marketing Summit as the event photographer. On occasion I do trade out work in exchange for event access. I get to meet pretty awesome people doing big things for pretty amazing companies.

I admire these people because of what they are doing in their industry, most of them are pretty well known for what they do, but I am glad that I am not on that level. You would think that when I am talking with these people in between sessions or at cocktail hours that I would have nothing in common with them but it turns to be quite the oposite. Most of these people come to these events and all they get to talk about is what they do. They are hundreds of miles away from home and they get to talk business all day. Of course they are passionate about what they do, this is why they are here, but the true passion for most is the things they enjoy outside of the office. Because I often am carrying my camera around, photography becomes the topic of conversation. Everybody loves pictures. I end up having great conversations with people which starts out with photography and usually ends up with life and family. I love talking to people about where they are from and what they do in their free time.

I have always made it a point to not force people to talk about things they have to talk about all day even if I am interested in what they might say. I want them to talk about what they are most passionate about, which is usually family or some sort of hobby. Now that I have a little boy I have found that I am able to relate to more people.

Being able to attend so many of these large events with people in attendance that are really doing things with big companies I often wish I had something to push, but I am glad that I don’t. I am a freelance photographer doing my own thing with nothing to push unless someone expresses that they just got engaged to be married. This allows me to just be and because of that I have the opportunity to connect with these people with no agenda, something they don’t experience often. Of course I get some value out of attending the events because the topics can relate to small business at times.

I walk around these events pretty relaxed. I have a list of the shots I must get, anything else is just icing on the cake. I don’t have anyone to answer to back at HQ. When I call back to HQ I am talking to my wife who makes my baby laugh into the phone which makes me smile.

When I talk to some of these people and explain to them that I am basically a freelance contractor I think that they see what I do is more risky then what they do. Everybody has a story about someone close that they know who tried to do their own thing and failed. In my mind I feel it would be more difficult to appease the higher ups then it would be to just do my own thing. If I fail at my own thing then I can just move on to the next. I guess that allows me to take more risks.

At this conference they are teaching medium to large business how to engage online with potential customers. Some of it I can not relate to because I will never have a situation like Southwest Airlines did with Kevin Smith but it’s great to see how theses companies do what they do on the large scale.

Now it’s time for me to go shoot some photos of a round table session that includes executives from Intel and McDonalds.

Conflicted Blogger

I know that this is going to sound weird coming from me but I have such a hard time finding things to blog about. I am mostly speaking about this blog. I have a photo blog and a tech blog that I keep a constant stream of content flowing through but what I am really passionate about is sharing ideas and helping people. I know that there are a lot of people out there who do what I do for a living and even more who just do it on the side for fun. I come across things quite often that I have to figure out because I can not find a reliable source online to explain it’s process. My problem is that I don’t have the time to write about it in a way that would adequately explain it to all levels of Photographers, Programmers and Graphic Designers. On top of that, the fix or how to that I just got done describing in length could come out in the form of a simple plug-in or add-on with in a matter of weeks rendering my work worthless. Nevertheless there are blog posts that I wrote years ago which still get a lot of traffic even though they are out of date and in my mind are worthless. Then the thought of creating content for the sake of creating content enters my mind. I don’t want to be that guy who blogs all day about stuff that is irrelevant a few days later. Now I am starting to judge how long this paragraph is getting…

Staying Focused
I am an observer and most would explain me as a person who pays attention to details and notices things that most do not. However when it comes to blogging and online ventures I have severe ADD, no ADHD. When it comes to the things that others care about I try to put on my brakes because I want to pay attention to what matters to them. Sometimes I am not good at this, my wife would question my last statement, but in truth I really do pay attention and listen well. When it comes to myself I am often all over the place, indecisive and borderline neurotic (unusually anxious). My focus is needed in so many different places that it makes it hard for me to concentrait on something for myself.

I have considered starting over with my blog. I have actually done that a few times but I always end up importing my old blogs back in. I would like to say that you could look at all of my past blogs and see where I was at in life at any point but the truth is that I have not been very good about blogging since I started. Maybe I should have challenged myself to writing a blog a day instead of taking a picture each day.

Finding Direction
Over the last several years I have been blessed to be busy with work. Because of that I have had to teach myself to say no and put limits on the work I accept. There are a lot of things that I know how to do that I don’t even let myself do anymore because it’s not a good use of my time and it’s not my current definite purpose in life. I say current definite purpose because I have changed definite purposes many times in my life. I have learned that you have to define your purpose, even if it’s only for the time being. Nowhere does it say that a clearly defined purpose has to remain the same throughout your life. It can change and in this day and age it does more often than ever before. This has made it hard for me to decide on a specific topic to blog on. I have been blogging for over ten years now in one way or another and in so many different directions that some might think I have no idea what I am trying to accomplish. I guess you could say that my blog is a place for whatever I happen to be passionate about at the moment. Being that I have been at it for so many years and still have yet to find a niche I can blog on for the long haul kind of frustrates me.

Finding Time
One of the things that blogging takes is time. Many bloggers simply look at other blogs or news topics for ideas but I truly want to offer something that is unique and that takes time to properly execute. One of my goals for 2011 was to make more time for that. It was actually a goal for 2010 that did not happen. Three weeks in to 2011 and I can tell you that if I keep things up the way they are going so far, I will be making this goal once again in 2012.

Last year I sent a lot of work away. Mainly because I was either to busy or it did not fit into the specific industry categories that I decided I was going to service. I did this because I wanted to free up time. I know how busy I need to stay to keep my families life comfortable so I decided to narrow down my offerings. Those of you who know me know that I used to perform all sorts of tech related services. Now I primarily focus on Wedding Photography and Website Design. I am not sure how much more I can specialize.

Deciding to specialize has done several things for me and could probably be a blog post in it’s own. My description of specializing may be a bit different than yours. I specialize in Wedding Photography. I specialize in Website Design for small business. I specialize in producing short demo videos for software developers. In my opinion that is specializing because in each of the three businesses that I currently have running I am promising that I will be amazing at one thing. I have been fortunate enough to be able to run these three businesses by myself for several years. However I do realize that if I want to become a better blogger, or not so much a better blogger but a more regular and consistant blogger I will have to start to delegate some of my work, or turn even more of it away. This really is important to me.

Finding Value
I know what I offer the world is valuable which is why I feel I can charge accordingly however everybody has to learn from somewhere. I taught myself how to write code (HTML, CSS, PHP, Java, some Ruby and ColdFusion), how to build computers, how to wire computer networks, how to use a DSLR Camera and so many other things. Almost all of the useful information that I gleaned to achieve all of this was from blogs and forums. Those who believe in the concept of Open source have given me so much that I have a constant desire to give back. This is also why I love talking about what I do to those who aspire to do similar. This is why I blog. I could have never afforded an education in all of these fields, I would still be in school. In most technology related fields, school moves to slow.

Money is for making things happen!
I love this quote from Sir Richard Branson’s book, “Screw it, let’s do it!”. I understand that there are responsibilities that we have to take care of in which money plays a big part but for me, more money means more possibilities. I always want to offer the best I can and that means having the best tools to do the job. I know that great things can be done humbly. Trust me, I have been there. Most of my 20’s were really humbling (yet another blog post or 20). It really does take money to make money. It is our entry fee for life. Everything will cost us in one way or another whether it be our time or our means. I consider it investing in myself and I constantly keep in check to make sure I am not just spending for spending sake. I am an impulsive person at times but my impulsiveness has led to some of the best victories I have had in life to date.

Back to finding time.
I think what I really need more then anything is time. Time can bring clarity and focus, two things that I know I need in order to obtain direction. I thought January was going to be that for me but so far it has not. If you are still reading at this point you can probably agree with my need for more time. You probably are also subconsciously recommending therapy as well. Funny, real funny! Here is my two step process to getting clarity, focus and direction.

1. Get back to business!
Completing all open business and find a more productive way to continue servicing my long term clients.

2. Back to the drawing board!
I need to remember to stick to the expectations I have for myself. I pride myself on meeting the expectations of my clients and over delivering if possible. I need to also make sure that the expectations I have for myself remain upheld during that process. I also need to make them known to the rest of the world so they can get a better idea of what I stand for and how I operate. Expectations are only good if the other party knows about them. All good relationships involve expectations and I think that it is time that I start putting mine out there.

Here is to 2011 not being like the years before!
